Understand your treatment scope

# Which teeth and which goals?

Separate the arch, named tooth set, intended objective and appliance, then connect a supplied service statement with what a fee actually covers\.

General education and clearly labelled fictional examples\. Your clinicians explain your individual findings and directions\.

## Four pieces that make the scope understandable

“Upper braces” tells you a location and an appliance category\. A useful clinical explanation goes further\. Keep these four pieces separate as you read a received proposal\.

- **Arch:** upper, lower or both locates the row or rows\.
- **Named tooth set:** the identified teeth describe the intended treatment area\. “Upper arch” and “the six upper front teeth” are not equally specific descriptions\.
- **Objective:** the intended change explains the purpose, such as the supplied front\-tooth alignment goal or an individually assessed contact goal\.
- **Appliance:** braces or aligners identify a category being proposed after assessment\. The name alone does not supply the other three answers\.

The BOS limited\-treatment discussion concerns objectives commonly focused on the six front teeth in one or both arches\. Counting arches therefore cannot define how broad a plan is\. Assessment and consideration of viable alternatives supply the clinical context for a particular proposal\.

## A completed scope map

Here is a short excerpt from Maya's fictional explanation, developed in the next lesson: her clinician has assessed her individually, proposes upper\-arch braces for the six upper front teeth, and states an alignment objective\. The explanation expressly leaves a separate change to back\-tooth contacts outside this proposal\.

**Completed reading:** upper is the arch, six upper front teeth is the identified area, their arrangement is the intended objective, and braces is the proposed appliance category\. The outside\-goal sentence tells us that this is not a proposal to change the back\-tooth contact relationship\. The clinician's supplied assessment and reason support this reading; the appearance of Maya's teeth does not establish eligibility for someone else\.

A broader goal needs its own explanation\. Daniel's separate fictional assessment names both arches because his clinician links their tooth positions with an identified front\-tooth contact objective\. Read those supplied reasons together in [the two complete proposals](</two-proposals-two-treatment-scopes>) \.

## A visible preference and the way teeth meet belong in the same conversation

You can describe an appearance concern clearly without already knowing the clinical scope\. AAO's adult guidance explains why moving front teeth can affect function and health, and why diagnosis comes before a customized plan\. The point is to connect the concern with an assessed explanation, not to dismiss the concern or infer that every small change needs the same treatment\.

If contact vocabulary is unfamiliar, the established [guide to how upper and lower teeth meet](<https://orthodonticbitebroward.com/how-upper-and-lower-teeth-meet>) separates direction and contact using teaching models\. That vocabulary does not itself prescribe a single\-arch or two\-arch plan\.

A person returning after earlier care also needs a present assessment\. An old completion record and a current proposal answer different questions; the [adult plan and follow\-up lesson](<https://alignerspembrokepines.com/adult-aligner-plan-and-follow-up>) develops that distinction\.

## What the supplied fee wording actually tells you

Maya's fictional administrative statement says its quoted fee applies to the described upper\-arch braces course, its planned clinical reviews and the specified retention arrangements\. It expressly excludes a new back\-tooth contact objective\. No amount is supplied in this example\.

**Completed reading:** the statement positively identifies the services to which that quotation applies\. It does not state a price, establish a half\-price relationship with another proposal, or promise that a different goal is included\. Clinical area and quoted services are connected here because the statement says so, not because an arch count automatically creates a contract\.

Daniel's separate statement covers his named both\-arch course and its alignment/contact reviews, with its stated retention arrangements; it does not include a separate color service\. The next lesson completes that comparison without declaring either proposal cheaper or better\. These invented statements are not SMILE\-FX® quotations or packages\.

If two documents have different planning and service status, the [proposed\-course and service\-scope lesson](<https://alignerquestionsbroward.com/proposed-course-and-service-scope>) follows that distinct issue\.
